The genus of salvia is huge and diverse with many varieties well suited to the summer garden with blooms reaching 5’ and lasting until the hard frost.
The collection offered from Beds & Borders represents a wonderful garden selection of tender perennials in zone 7.
Salvia leucantha - This is a well branched 3' sub-shrub by fall when it
flowers. Lacinate, Tomentose, grey-green leaves are attractive all
season. In September, flowers appear. The show peaks for the fall
garden when all else is in decline. It is an exceptional cut flower,
fresh or dried. One plant has over 100 flower stalks on it. Last
till the killing frost. Tomentose violet-purple calyx with either a
white or purple corolla.
Salvia x 'Purple Majesty' -
Of S. guaranitica parentage comes this regal purple form similar in
most respects to S. guaranitica. Large mint green leaves on robust
stems reaching 4-5'. Blooms mid summer until hard frost.
Salvia farinacea ‘Victoria Blue’ - Common blue bedding form
of Salvia, uncommon quantities. Pencil thin deep violet-blue flower
spikes are 18” tall, long lasting cut or dried.
Salvia chiapensis - Throughout the summer and into October
bright fuchsia, fuzzy blooms contrast solidly with its deep green,
glossy leaves. Stems sprawl allowing the plant to achieve a nice 18”
spread flower spikes reaching 2’. Sun.
Salvia mexicana 'Tula' -
Collected by Carl Shoenfeld and John Fairey, this salvia is
outrageous. Picture a 5-6' tall, stout plant with long inflorescences
bejeweled with exaggerated lime green calyces. Corollas emerge in
deep gentian blue creating a contrast beyond all dreams. Sun or part
shade blooms in September until hard frost.
Salvia x 'Indigo Spires' -
Dramatic salvia with densely packed, deep violet-blue spikes
appearing throughout the summer peaking right on through till frost.
The color intensifies as the nights get colder. In August expect the
flower spikes to reach 2' atop 4-6' plants. A hybrid product of S.
farinacea and S. longispicata, the blooms resemble that of Victoria
Blue only larger in every way. consistently a top seller for a good
reason. At the back of the order the woody base is hidden and the
effect is spectacular.
Salvia van Houttei -
With burgundy calyx and corolla deep rosy red, this is a premium 4'
salvia. Grows in any reasonably moist soil but in light shade it is
extraordinary. Rapid growth ab d floriferous habit characterize this
summer and autumn thriller.
Salvia guaranitica Black & Blue -
Dwarf form of guaranitica, with a black caylx and the same gentian
blossom. July blooming species that reaches 5' in a season. Broad,
ovate, mint-green leaves draw out both yellow & blue tones.
Praticularly useful in the border in August nas September for tall
color. Plant several together to make a statement. Can handle part
day shade.
Salvia involucrata ‘Mulberry Jam’ - Unlike the rosebud Salvia, this
involucrata selection has a graceful flower spike without a chunky
knob at the end. Color is a deep fuchsia pink in both bracts and
blossoms and reaches 4-5’ in full sun or part shade
Kathryn Pufahl shared her knowledge of salvia on TV with Martha Stewart in October 2002 and in the New York Times in October of 2001.
