The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope.

Eliminating plastic use in our greenhouse is a long term goal and more so a responsibility for us at Beds & Borders. Our vetting process for sustainable alternatives started in the fall of 2018, by 2019 we partnered with The HC Companies to create a custom made square biobased quart pot.

After two years of development, we are proud and excited to add into production for the 2021 Spring Season, Custom made Square EcoGrow pots.

In addition, Beds & Borders has integrated over the past 15 years the following sustainable alternatives from The HC Companies existing FiberGrow line.  12” and 14” Fiber Hanging Baskets and 8” Fiber Pots.

Herbs & Vegetable Line 2021

This year we have expanded our line of annuals to include an Herbs and Vegetable Selection for the 2021 Season. We are not Certified Organic (yet!) so you cannot advertise these as organic. We have adopted the following growing practices to ensure a safe product we would feel comfortable feeding to our families.

All Seeds are USDA Certified Organic when available

All seeds are untreated

All Plugs are USDA Certified Organic

Grown in OMRI certified (Organic Materials Review Institute) Soil

We use Beneficial Insects as a preventative pest management strategy.

OMRI Certified Herbicides, Insecticides, and Fungicides are only being used on an as needed basis.

All plants are propagated or planted and placed into a separate isolated greenhouse

Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) are not used.

We are confident the nutrient and additive rich soil will greatly reduce, if not eliminate, the need to use synthetic fertilizers. Our initial trials look very promising.

Our plants are grown in one of our two facilities; Laurel and Mattituck. Most of our plants come from seed or through in-house propagation.  Additionally, we outsource bulbs, unrooted cuttings, and rooted plugs from many different breeders and suppliers.

At Laurel, there are approximately 5 acres of indoor growing space, a combination of glass greenhouses and high tunnel hoop houses.vLaurel is set up for propagation with ground heat, a seeder, a germination chamber, and a misting station. Laurel is where we transplant all our young plants into their finished pots, using two state-of-the-art potting machines.

At Wickham, there are approximately three acres of glass greenhouses.

We got our start by tending stock for choice annuals that weren’t available in the industry at large. We have continued that tradition, over 160 of our plant varieties begin as stock plants.  Stock plants grow during our off-season and are pinched often to ensure they are ready to be harvested for cuttings, some of our plants like the Coleus ‘Compact Red’, have been propagating since 1987.

During the spring to harden-off material we turn the temperature down in isolated hoop houses, we use rolling benches to bring plants inside and out, depending on the weather. We use unheated greenhouse space that simulates the outdoor environment, and/or we move material into a wind-protected outdoor growing space. Most plants that are hardened off will have undergone at least one if not all of these processes prior to shipping.

We take pride in our intimate growing process. Our grower Fredy Alvarado along with the entire team waters, spaces, pinch and deadheads all plants by hand. We talk to them, play them music and pray to them. We truly care for our plants and ultimately they end up caring for us more than we could imagine in return.
